The CLOUDUT project aims to increase research capacity in order to raise the level of scientific competitiveness at the international level of UTCN, by creating a cloud infrastructure, called CLOUDUT, which can be integrated into national and international cloud structures and massive data infrastructures, allowing research and development in the fields of big data, deep learning, spatial data and IoT, as well as the use of these technologies in a wide range of engineering, economic and administrative applications, required by the regional and national economic environment. The CLOUDUT infrastructure will expand the possibility to participate in national and international research projects such as Horizon 2020.
Project motivation and general development intentions
The project is integrated in the Institutional Development Strategy of the Technical University of Cluj-Napoca (UTCN) regarding the Development of the research-innovation infrastructure.
The CLOUDUT infrastructure, in particular due to the flexible capacity to configure and dynamically expand the services according to the needs of the beneficiary research teams and projects, will allow a better use of both processing resources and human scientific potential. The much more efficient reuse of the results of research projects, software applications and services, data models and scientific papers developed in the scientific and engineering field is envisaged. All these results constitute a portfolio through which the research teams from the Technical University of Cluj-Napoca will be able to make a more valuable contribution in the consortia of some international research projects.
Also, the cloud computing infrastructure and the massive data center will constitute the basis and framework for interdisciplinary collaborations between the various research teams in the Technical University and will contribute to the increase of the capacity to participate in national and international research projects in the fields of Big Data, Artificial Intelligence, spatial and satellite data processing or Internet of Things (IoT). This scientific and professional capacity will allow the use of these technologies in a wide range of engineering, economic and administrative applications, required by the regional and national economic environment.
The implementation of the project will allow the implementation of a prioritised support of research topics with high performance potential for the University, in accordance with the Horizon 2020 program and the National Research, Development and Innovation Strategy 2014-2020, respectively. It will also increase the research capacity, in order to raise the level of scientific competitiveness at the international level of the Technical University of Cluj-Napoca, and implicitly of the local and regional scientific community.
